Benefits

As a foster carer, you may be able to top up your income by claiming certain social security benefits. The rules have historically been quite generous to foster carers, in recognition of the valuable work that you do.

You may be able to claim more than one benefit. For this reason, it is easy to get confused as to what benefits (if any) you are entitled to claim, and what you should do in order to maximise your household income.

A list of the main social security benefits that are likely to apply to foster carers is provided below.

  • Income Support
  • Carer’s Allowance
  • Working Tax Credit
  • Child Tax Credit
  • Disability Living Allowance
  • Jobseekers’ Allowance
  • Housing & Council Tax Benefit
  • Free school meals, health benefits, etc
